Ferrous Metals are not permitted into the MRI room for various reasons

The strong magnets of the MRI can:

Certain items can become dangerous projectiles:

Cause distortion of the MRI images:

Any metallic object
Pins
Hairpins
Metal zippers
Permanent tattoos and cosmetics contain metal particles and should be covered by a damp cloth

The extremely strong magnetic field of the MRI can displace or disrupt the action of IMPLANTED METALLIC OBJECTS

This is the reason that the MRI is contraindicated in certain individuals.

BRAIN- Most Aneurysm Clips
Most clips in brain tissue after surgery

EYE-Periorbital wire
Eyelid spring or wire
Prosthesis implant

EAR -Middle ear surgery with cochlear implant

IMPLANTS- ANY Position- (MAGNETIC OR ELECTRONIC)
Electrode implants
Spinal cord stimulator

CARDIAC(heart) defibrillator/pacemaker

PREGNANCY – Effect on Fetus unknown

MRI TO BE AVOIDED FOR 6-8 WEEKS

Any Cardiac Surgery

Prosthetic Heart Valve-DEPENDS ON TYPE OF VALVE

Vascular Surgery

Vascular access port and /or Catheter

IMPLANTS- Any Stent, Filter or Coil placement

MRI POSSIBLE AFTER ADDRESSING THE ISSUE
BRAIN Prior Brain Surgery	If no clips left in brain tissue
EYE Prior eye surgery	If no metal (cataract) OR metal is removable
EAR Hearing aid	After removal (gets damaged)
DENTURES wether or not attatched with magnets	After removal for head and neck scans
Neurostimulator device TENS unit	After Removal
Any infusion pump Insulin /any other drug	Disconnecting pump OR after being Shut off and emptied at Primary care Physicians office
Body piercing jewelry	If not removable- cover with damp cloth
Medication Patch	After removal of any containing aluminized plastic eg Habitrol,Duragesic
Breast feeding	Gadolinium(contrast) cannot be used unless milk is pumped out for 48 hrs.
Tissue expanders(breast Implants)	If removable
Known or possible metal fragments in the eye head or body eg welders, machinists,sheet metal workers etc	Need screening Xray to check position. Cannot do MRI if metal present in eye
Surgical staples,clips sutures	As long as none in Brain
IUD (Intra Uterine Device)	After checking make and model

Joint or Limb replacement

War Injury- gun shot , bullets,BB’s

Radiation seeds/ implants

Allergy to any drug except Gadolinium and contrast material

Asthma/Emphysema

Seizures

Blood/kidney/liver respiratory disorders.
